Film Institutions

Paramount Pictures
     Paramount pictures is a corporation that is a film and television production company that was funded back in 1912. it is the fourth oldest and best existing studio in today's film industry. But behind universal studios ,Gaumount pictures and Pathe. It is also the last major film studio that is still in Hollywood Paramount is consistently posted as one of the largest movie studios!!!! Paramount also helped to produce some great films of all time such as Forrest Gump,Lassie,Kiss the girls and Charlotte's web!

Universal Pictures
          Universal Pictures ( or also known as Universal Studios) is an American film studio it is also one of the six major movie studios.It is also commonly known for the fact that it is one of the longest-lived motion picture studios to be found out side of Hollywood. This film institute was also founded in 1912!

our decisions
    at the moment we are debating on whether we should use paramount pictures or universal pictures. The reason why we are unsure if because;
   for universal pictures because;
  • the music is easier to download- not a very valid point i must admit but hey ho.
  • the opening is longer and is more vibrant with colors.
  • it has a loud opening which doesn't suit our genre.
  • it isn't very common for this institute to do a psychological thriller.
  • its animated and ' more ' interesting  for this type of genre.
  • it has a background of other films that are slightly in our genre range.
for paramount pictures because;
  • it suits our genre.
  • its quiet so it will build the tension.
  • it isn't vibrant so it suits the fact that our opening is going to not be bright and colorful.
  • we already disucssed the fact that paramount was a better decision as we included it in our story board.
  • this institution does our genre and has the right ' little ' production companies.

Target Audience.

          The 'British Board of Film Classification'  has certain age restrictions on certain films. This is because of the structure of the film as well as what scenes, languages, genre or sexual scenes there are. Below is the logo for the 'British Board of Film Classification' this is usually behind every age certificate.

              There are very different stages in films so that is why the BBFC made the age certificates. They made them because not everybody was the same age so not everybody was in the right state of minds so you cant show a film like 'Insidious' to a 5 year old, as they would become terrified! So that is why we have age classifications so that the wrong people don't see this film.So they made 'U' , 'PG' , '12' , '15' , '18'. So there are age restrictions on what people can see what films.

Blog update

Today we will be animating our story board and we will be adding in the camera turns and view points.  Due to the loss of Jessica and Ashleigh we was unable to get them to help us do the story board. so it was just me and Rebecca. The reason in which we done the animation was by hovering the camera just above the pictures and just staying on a single picture for a while then we moved that picture away to the next scene. We then uploaded this to the computer and then on ' Final cut express ' we cut and edited the video so we just cut out the bits where we was moving the paper (scene).

Our two ideas..

My personal thoughts on the diffferent ideas are;
              Well we had  two ideas to start with one of them was a psychological horror where a girl had been kiddnapped and been thrown in the boot. She is tied and bound with ropes at her hands and feet with a scarf in her mouth and wrapped around her had and done in a knot at the back. The car will be a land rover - this choice of car will enable us to have some good car shots with different angles. With the car having a big boot it will enable the actor to struggle to move arround and to see anything. The non-digetic vocals will be the kiddnappers having a conversation out side of ther car. 15-19 as it has some grousome scenes and with some bad language.

     Our second idea was a physiological thriller where we would have voice overs with the best friend and a police man having a conversation about the friend that the police think commited suicide. But the best friend is persistant that she did not commit suicide and is convinces that her killer is out there! At the start with the credits and the title we will have the same layout and theme of the film ' kiss the girls'. We liked the idea of the fire sliding over one another as well as the negative toned pictures with the actual footage and the pictures of the actors as well as the effect of what will be happening 15-24 will be the age range for this viewing.

Different shots.

         This is shot reverse shot. You can use this to show both sides of a conversation. Its just like over the shoulder shot but a ferw of those shots combined.People would often use this shot in the middle of am argument.you would use a 'shot reverse shot' ,  if 2 people were having an argument or a conversation. But just focusing on those two people it means that its either important or they are important.You could use this in every genre allthough it is most commonly used in horror,thriller and romantic comedies.
 Aerial shot
   This is when the camera is over someones head and it takes a shot. This is quite often used as an Establishing shot.

                                                     Close up
    This is a shot when the head and shoulders are the only things that can be seen of the body.This is used to show expressions or emotions of that character.It can also be a shot of an object, you could zoom in to the object to show more detail.

Extreme close up
       This is a shot where a part of the face or body of a character fills up the screen or dominates the whole frame. This can also be done for an object where only a small part of it will dominate the screen.

Establishing shot
     Basically its a shot where it will establish the scene, this gives the viewer information about where your filming is set. Its usually a wide or long shot and it most oftentimes appears at the begging of a scene.

Medium shot
     This is when you shoot from the waist upwards.

                                                 Two shot
     A shot of two characters maybe in a conversation. usually to symbolise some relationship.

Point-of-view shot
     Where you see a view from the subject's eyes. This is commonly edited so the viewer can see what person this is.

Overhead shot
     A type

                                                                                                                                                               Reaction shot

Mise-en scene

  Mise-en scene is about having all of the right things in the right place as the costumes. For example you cant have a horror movie in the middle of the beach on a hot day, you cant have a random Marks and Spencer's bag in the scene, you cant have a victim running away with perfect clothes and running shoes. These are all examples of what doesn't make a good Mise-en scene.

Over the shoulder shot

               This is an example of an ' over the shoulder shot '. This can be used in a conversation between 2-5 people. The smaller the group the better. Or the recorder camera just pan round.Directors would pick this shot because , you can see all of the people that are in this conversation and this is so that they can focus on who is talking and so that the viewers can see what person is talking. An over the shoulder is pretty self explanatory in the name. It is simply a shot the person who is talking from behind someones shoulder.This is commonly used in all genres so there isn't a right or wrong in this shot for the genre.

Research of fonts

 The reason why this font would be great for our film is because  the lettering is bold and it has the effect that something has been scratching at it and it gives it this 'patchy' effect. The letters are also in capitial letters which just makes it stand out more compared to ' 28 days later '. The lettering is not perfect which is great because if it was perfect then it would not suit the genre.

This style of font really grasps my attention , due to the fact  that the writing is  in a font that looks like ' blades'. The way that they have done this is great because the font style gives away what the film includes. This can really intrigue viewers into seeing this film. You can clearly see that from this style that this film is not going to be about pretty pink fairy's  it is going to be about blades, blood, gory things so a horror genre

   This font doesn't really catch your eye but its more of a ' sharp' effect. The way that the font is done is amazing because on the 'A' and 'V' they have elongated the top of the 'A' and the bottom of the 'V'. In a way it gives it more of a dagger effect.

This font is okay. The reason why I think that this is not a very good font is because of the style. Its a bit like old fashion writing - which was curly and hard to read unless it was huge. However I do like the fact that it looks like a fountain pen. This suggests to me that its going to be like a child's book.
This font really stands out because its big , bold and in captial letters and this will also make a statement to the audience by saying ' look  at the title its important to the film'. If the font was small and hard to real then no one would read it but because it is big and clear people will be able to read it and understand what it says.

This font really grabs by attention because it had the effect that it is painted on. Personally i think that it would look better red . Because then it would look like someone has painted the title in blood. The fact that it is bold as well really stand out, its also in clear lettering which means it is easy to read.

     There are different types of fonts that can be used in a horror movie. some people prefer to use just normal ' Ariel ' font. This is because its easy to read, and it is usually on a black or white background with red or white colored writing. The red symbolizes blood. This means that some kind of horrible crime will be committed. These are just a few of the styles that I have found that we can be influenced by to do our titles and credits.

Genres.

                      This is my research of the types of genres and what they consist of. My job was to research horror and thriller.
 Below is also a video of me talking about the different types of genre and what I think of them.

                                The film 'easy A' is a romantic-comedy, in this film it includes things such
a girl and a boy finding them selves as nobody and then the girl pretends to loose her virginity for a laugh but then it turns around on her in school. Then she wears the red 'A' on her clothes for symbolism. You will also find some funny bits with romance and this is what makes a romantic comedy.For a romantic comedy to be good it needs the right actors and the right story line.
              The adventure comedy is all about a really good story line and plot! Also you cant have comedy charecters in this film as people will just over look the film. An example of an adventure film is back to the future. This film is all about a boy who can travel back or forward in time with his granfathers time machine ( a car) and with this he uses it to change history! What makes a really good adventure film is whether it has a lot of money or whether it has a good scenery and props for the film to be based.

   A psychological thriller is a great film to watch. The conventions of a physiological thriller is that it gives the viewers a negative emotion towards it. They will become scared and get too engrossed in to it.This is because of the story line behind it. A great psychological thriller example is ' sinister'. This is all about a writer who follows the crimes of people. But he is very intrigued by this case of the family dying but the youngest child always going missing. When they move into the house he finds a black box with tapes of previous families dying, but all missing the child. Then he discovers the boogle....
